<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
MANILA -- Senator Leila de Lima on Monday cried foul over accusations that convicted drug kingpins raised millions in cash to fund her poll campaign last May.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
At the same time, de Lima accused the Duterte administration of blackmailing and bribing inmates at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) to fabricate testimonies against her at a congressional inquiry this week.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
The senator insisted that she never received “even a single cent” from convict Jaybee Sebastian, who allegedly ordered gangs in the NBP to contribute P16 million to de Lima’s campaign kitty by selling narcotics.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
“Puro po kasinungalingan ang lalabas diyan. Hindi po ako coddler, hindi po ako protector ng mga drug convicts or drug lords. Lalong lalo na, wala po akong tinatanggap kahit singko kaninuman -- convict man o hindi,” de Lima told radio DZMM.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
(Everything that will be revealed there are lies. I am not a coddler, I am not a protector of drug convicts or drug lords. I never accepted even a cent from anyone –- convict or not. )</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
An inmate who will face the inquiry of the House of Representatives claims that Sebastian, who was convicted of carjacking and kidnapping, organized the “fundraising” for de Lima sometime in 2014, the Philippine Star reported Sunday.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
One inmate said Jad de Vera, an alleged nephew of De Lima, would collect the money twice a week.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Those who defied the order were allegedly transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) jail in Manila and suffered an end to their <strong>VIP perks</strong>.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<strong>‘PERJURED, COERCED’ WITNESSES</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
But De Lima claimed that the witnesses were either offered paroles or blackmailed into giving false testimonies.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
“Ang mga so-called witnesses na iyan can only be false, perjured or coerced. Magsisinungaling o nagsisinungaling po lahat iyan. It's either tinakot sila o may mga ipinangako sa kanila," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
(These so-called witnesses can only be false, perjured or coerced. All of them will lie or are already lying. It’s either they were threatened or were promised something.)</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
The high-profile convicts, she said, also loathe her as she ordered a series of raids on their luxurious “kubols” and transferred them to the NBI facility and later to a <strong>high-security facility</strong> at NBP.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"Lalo na kung kasama iyan sa mga Bilibid 19, siyempre mga galit po sa akin iyan dahil doon po sa pag-raid ko sa kanila noon at paglipat NBI at paglipat ulit sa [NBP] Builbing 14,” de Lima said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
(Especially the members of Bilibibd 19, they are mad at me because I raided them and transferred them to the NBI and again to the NBP Building 14.)</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Reacting to the reported drug ties of her alleged nephew, de Lima also scoffed: “Hindi ko po iyan kilala, sino iyan?” (I don't know him, who is that?)</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<strong>PATCHWORK OF LIES</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Among the high-value inmates testifying at the House probe are Herbert Colangco and Noel Martinez, who have been transferred to the custody of a military facility due to security concerns.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Colangco has claimed that de Lima also collected a monthly payola of P3 million for protecting their illegal activities inside the NBP.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
He further alleged that Sebastian, whom de Lima favored, monopolized the NBP narcotics trade when he and other inmates were moved to the NBI.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said a <strong>high-ranking government official</strong> will also testify on how he delivered at least P5 million in drug payoffs per visit to de Lima’s house in Parañaque.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
De Lima, for her part, fired back at the administration over inconsistent accusations against her.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
“Napaka-kumplikado na ng istorya nila. Kasi sa kakaimbento nila ng istorya, hindi sila nakakabuo ng tunay na kapani-paniwalang istorya,” she snapped.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
(Their story is already very complicated. They keep fabricating stories so they cannot form a truly believable narrative.)</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
“Ano man pong testigo, ano mang ebidensya ang ilalabas nila -- inmates, former officials ng DOJ, NBI o anuman -- wala pong katotohanan iyan.”</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
(Any witness, any evidence they will release -- inmates, former officials of DOJ, NBI or whatever -– there will be no truth to it.)</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
In the right time, the senator also promised to explain the “operational strategy” on why Sebastian was left at the NBP when other high-value inmates were transferred to NBI.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
De Lima is not attending the “sham inquiry” which starts Tuesday.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
The senator has earned President Duterte’s ire by leading a Senate investigation into the hundreds of deaths in the vicious war on drugs.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Last week, she presented as witness Edgar Matobato, a self-confessed hitman who accused Duterte of ordering the killings of suspected criminals and political opponents in Davao City during his term as mayor.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">

Divorce law may be beneficial to couples' children: group

<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Contrary to popular belief, divorce may be helpful for children of couples in troubled marriages, a feminist group said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"We have to be authentic, we have to be honest with the children [about] what the relationship really is now. Minsan, nagkukunwari sila na okay pa, pero the children witness yung conflict between the couple and it’s not healthy for the children as well," Jean Enriquez, the national coordinator of the World March of Women said on ANC's Headstart.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
She cited, there are longitudinal researches that prove that it’s better for children if the parents separate or get divorced instead of pretending to be together.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
However, she also noted that a couple has to go through a thorough process when availing of divorce.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"I believe like any law, it has to go through a process, so they have to prove that the differences are irreconcilable as the law provides. Ibig sabihin, kailangan din nilang patunayan na hindi na ‘to maaayos," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
The divorce law they wish to be implemented in the country, she said, is one where everyone benefits.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"A divorce law that first considers also the welfare of the children, the welfare of both spouses that’s not really biased towards one sex. Basically, this is for the good of everyone—hindi lang para sa babae, hindi lang rin para sa lalaki; kundi sa lahat," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
A divorce law can also help reduce the chances of women being kept in abusive marriages, Enriquez said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"A divorce law will hugely help especially women who are in an abusive relationship," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Among the grounds for divorce in the House Bill 2380 filed by women's party-list Gabriela on Wednesday was "irreconcilable differences that have caused the irreparable breakdown of marriage," and she said it should cover abuses in the relationship.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Enriquez, citing studies, said 1 out 5 Filipino women are being abused in relationships, and keeping them in the relationship where there is abuse like infidelity will only worsen the situation.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Enriquez also stressed that existing laws on adultery and concubinage are unfair to women, and included in their proposal is to remove these and replace them with divorce altogether.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
She also dispelled belief that marriages won’t last because there is divorce available.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"I don’t think that we should be worried that the sanctity of marriage will be threatened because it is going to be protected by those who are truly in love and who have really decided to work on the marriage, but we cannot force it on people who are in abusive relationships because it’s also life-threatening," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<strong>THE CHURCH AND COLD LEGISLATORS?</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Meanwhile, she also believes the fifth filing of the bill in the Philippine congress may no longer be as contentious as previous attempts, as the changing times may now allow for a freer debate on whether or not it is time to pass the law.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"We are hopeful because this has been filed five years ago, and right now, there seems to be a better atmosphere, political atmosphere for it," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Even Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, she cited, "was hastening the process of annulment in the Church."</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"That tells us that there’s a change of thinking towards relationships—that it can change. It’s possible that some marriages might be ending," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
However, the largely conservative Catholic Church in the Philippines, which strongly lobbied against the Reproductive Health Law may once again campaign against it.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"But I would like to invoke the argument that a lot of women are suffering in abusive relationships, and it’s our public interest to protect those who are abused. Therefore, I hope that the Catholic Church would consider that," said Enriquez.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<span style="font-size: 16px;">She is also hopeful the legislators will promote what their constituents' desire, when as she cited, 60% of the population want the divorce law passed according to the latest Social Weather survey released in 2015.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"I think it’s important for them to consider that a lot of people are now pushing for the bill, for the divorce bill because that’s really is life-saving for many women who are abused, of which the Catholic Church is also very concerned about," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Enriquez also nixed counter-proposals to the divorce bill, wherein annulment will be made cheaper and more accessible.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"I’m just wondering why that proposal when divorce could make everything easier. As we’ve said, there’s a huge difference between annulment and divorce," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Enriquez noted that divorce differs from annulment which is currently present in the country, wherein the former nullifies the marriage based on grounds existing since the start of the marriage, while the latter "recognizes that relationships change."</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"It doesn’t nullify the reality of marriage, and it also tells the children that there really was marriage that happened, except that it changed. Sometimes, the problems are irreparable, and therefore irreconcilable din 'yung differences, and it would be better for children for the relationship to be transformed," she said.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Ideally, the divorce will also be less expensive and speedier than annulment, according to Enriquez.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
<span style="font-size: 16px;">"Right now, for many couples, it would take them P100,000 to be able to process an annulment and it takes years as well. Some of my friends had to go through the painful process for ten years," she said.</span></div>

<span style="line-height: 1.5;">President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday surprised everyone inside the Batasang Pambansa when he approached and greeted Senator Leila de Lima before he delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).</span></div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
Duterte was on his way to the rostrum when he suddenly stopped and shook De Lima's hand.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
De Lima said she was surprised by Duterte's gesture.</div>
<div style="font-family: franklin-gothic-urw, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 1.5; padding: 10px 0px;">
"I was surprised. I was surprised because when he was several feet away from me, he just looked at me and he was serious. But when he was right in front of me, he extended his hand, approached me, smiled and he didn't say anything. I just said, 'Hi, Sir,' to the delight of the audience," she said.</div>
