MANILA - A suspected drug trafficker who is the brother of a town vice mayor in southern Cebu has surrendered to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
PNP chief Director Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa presented alleged drug lord Franz Sabalones to reporters at Camp Crame in Quezon City Monday.
Dela Rosa said Sabalones, who submitted himself to authorities on Sunday night, ranked only second to the late Jeffrey “Jaguar” Diaz, believed to be Cebu's top drug lord.
"Siya (Sabalones) iyung ka-level ni Jaguar, iyung napatay... Mataas nang kaunti si Jaguar sa kanya, siya ang number 2 sa Region 7, Central Visayas," dela Rosa said.
Asked why he surrendered to the police, Sabalones meekly said, "Gusto kong magbago."
Dela Rosa said Sabalones may be turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
MISTAKEN IDENTITY
The alleged drug bigwig was accompanied by his brother, Vice Mayor Fralz Sabalones of San Fernando, Cebu.
President Duterte on Sunday accused the vice mayor and over 150 other individuals of alleged links to the drug trade.
But the local official claimed he was a victim of mistaken identity, saying the President may have been referring to his elder brother, Franz.
He noted that his name sounds very alike to that of his brother.
Duterte on Sunday erroneously identified Fralz Sabalones as a candidate "who ran for mayor but actually maybe lost."
