President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday surprised everyone inside the Batasang Pambansa when he approached and greeted Senator Leila de Lima before he delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Duterte was on his way to the rostrum when he suddenly stopped and shook De Lima's hand.
De Lima said she was surprised by Duterte's gesture.
"I was surprised. I was surprised because when he was several feet away from me, he just looked at me and he was serious. But when he was right in front of me, he extended his hand, approached me, smiled and he didn't say anything. I just said, 'Hi, Sir,' to the delight of the audience," she said.
De Lima, a former human rights commission chief and justice secretary, has been critical of the Davao Death Squad and Duterte's statements against criminals which seem to endorse extra-judicial killings..
