Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returned to the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, taking a bit of Dubai with her.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The 43-year-old actress and L’Oreal ambassador, who made her debut at the renowned festival in 2002, wore a ball gown designed by UAE-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco for her first appearance this year. The floor-sweeping embroidered powder blue gown is from Cinco’s Impalpable Dream of Versailles collection, featuring layers and layers of tulle.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
“Aishwarya is one of the most beautiful women in the world that I really admire and love. To see her wearing my couture dress on the red carpet in Cannes Film Festival is a dream come true,” Cinco told <em>Gulf News tabloid!</em>. “The dress is inspired from the painting of Infanta Maria Theresa, the wife of the Sun King Louis IV of the Palace of Versailles.”</div>

“It was the first time that an Indian movie was screened here ... soon after, I was here as a jury member which was a first for any Indian actor. <div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
(Reuters) Washington/Toronto: Cyber security researchers have found technical evidence they said could link North Korea with the global WannaCry "ransomware" cyber attack that has infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries since Friday.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Symantec (<span id="symbol_SYMC.O_0">SYMC.O</span>) and Kaspersky Lab said on Monday that some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had also appeared in programs used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">"This is the best clue we have seen to date as to the origins of WannaCry," Kaspersky Lab researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Reuters.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Both firms said it was too early to tell whether North Korea was involved in the attacks, based on the evidence that was published on Twitter by Google security researcher Neel Mehta. The attacks, which slowed on Monday, are among the fastest-spreading extortion campaigns on record.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The research will be closely followed by law enforcement agencies around the world, including Washington, where President Donald Trump's homeland security adviser said on Monday that both foreign nations and cyber criminals were possible culprits.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">he two security firms said they needed to study the code more and asked for others to help with the analysis. Hackers do reuse code from other operations, so even copied lines fall well short of proof.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">U.S. and European security officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity that it was too early to say who might be behind the attacks, but they did not rule out North Korea as a suspect.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">FireEye Inc (<a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=FEYE.O" style="color: #2575bc; cursor: pointer;"><span id="symbol_FEYE.O_1">FEYE.O</span></a>), another large cyber security firm, said it was also investigating a possible link.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">"The similarities we see between malware linked to that group and WannaCry are not unique enough to be strongly suggestive of a common operator," FireEye researcher John Miller said.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">The Lazarus hackers, acting for impoverished North Korea, have been more brazen in pursuit of financial gain than others, and have been blamed for the theft of $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank, according to some cyber security firms. The North Korean mission to the United Nations was not immediately available for comment.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Regardless of the source of the attack, investors piled into cyber security stocks on Monday, betting that governments and corporations will spend more to upgrade their defenses.</span></div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoBoldCondensed, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; font-weight: 400; margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">The perpetrators had raised less than $70,000 from users paying to regain access to their computers, according to Trump homeland security adviser Tom Bossert.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">"We are not aware if payments have led to any data recovery," Bossert said, adding that no U.S. federal government systems had been affected.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">WannaCry demanded ransoms starting at $300, in line with many cyber extortion campaigns, which keep pricing low so more victims will pay.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Still, some security experts said they were not sure if the motive of WannaCry was primarily to make money, noting that large cyber extortion campaigns typically generate millions of dollars of revenue.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">“I believe that this was spread for the purpose of causing as much damage as possible,” said Matthew Hickey, a co-founder of British cyber consulting firm Hacker House.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">The countries most affected by WannaCry to date are Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine and India, according to Czech security firm Avast.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">The number of infections has fallen dramatically since Friday’s peak when more than 9,000 computers were being hit per hour. Earlier on Monday, Chinese traffic police and schools reported they had been targeted as the attack rolled into Asia for the new work week, but no there were no major disruptions.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Authorities in Europe and the United States turned their attention to preventing hackers from spreading new versions of the virus.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Shares in firms that provide cyber security services rose sharply, led by Israel's Cyren Ltd (<a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=CYRN.O" style="color: #2575bc; cursor: pointer;"><span id="symbol_CYRN.O_2">CYRN.O</span></a>) and U.S.-based FireEye (<a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=FEYE.O" style="color: #2575bc; cursor: pointer;"><span id="symbol_FEYE.O_3">FEYE.O</span></a>).</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span id="midArticle_1">Morgan Stanley, in upgrading the stock, said Cisco should benefit from network spending driven by security needs.</span></div>

<span style="font-weight: 700;">Political Topic</span></h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Beyond the immediate need to shore up computer defenses, the attack turned cyber security into a political topic in Europe and the United States, including discussion of the role national governments play.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
In a blog post on Sunday, Microsoft Corp (<a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=MSFT.O" style="color: #2575bc; cursor: pointer;"><span id="symbol_MSFT.O_5">MSFT.O</span></a>) President Brad Smith confirmed what researchers already widely concluded: The attack made use of a hacking tool built by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) that had leaked online in April.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
He poured fuel on a long-running debate over how government intelligence services should balance their desire to keep software flaws secret - in order to conduct espionage and cyber warfare - against sharing those flaws with technology companies to better secure the internet.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
On Monday, Bossert sought to distance the NSA from any blame.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
"This was not a tool developed by the NSA to hold ransom data. This was a tool developed by culpable parties, potentially criminals or foreign nation-states, that were put together in such a way as to deliver phishing emails, put it into embedded documents, and cause infection, encryption and locking," Bossert said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting the technology's link to the U.S. spy service, said it should be "discussed immediately on a serious political level."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
"Once they're let out of the lamp, genies of this kind, especially those created by intelligence services, can later do damage to their authors and creators," he said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
BEIJING, China – President Rodrigo Duterte had a pull-aside meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, China.</div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
Duterte revealed this in a news conference upon arriving in Davao City early morning Tuesday, May 16.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
"By the way, I had a talk with the President Erdogan and the Prime Minister of – si Erdenebat – <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">sa</em> (of) Mongolia," he volunteered.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
The meeting with the Mongolian leader took place on Saturday, May 13. The meeting with Erdogan took 10 minutes, according to a Palace official. No other details had been released.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
Duterte said the two leaders met with him supposedly to ask if they can "join" the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which the Philippines chairs this year. He said he favored it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
"<em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Gusto nila mag-sali sa ASEAN</em> (They want to join ASEAN). And since I am now the chair, <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">ang Pilipinas ngayon</em> (it's the Philippines as chair now), they wanted me to sponsor that entry and I said, 'Yes, why not?'" he said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
The President recalled that Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of Myanmar, who was also at the Beijing event, asked him whether the two countries could be considered part of Southeast Asia – one of the criteria for ASEAN membership.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
Duterte said he responded that he believed both are part of the ASEAN geographical area.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
Turkey, while considered to be straddling Europe and Asia, is nowhere near Southeast Asia. Mongolia is bordered by China and Russia.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 18px; margin-top: 50px;">Two strong-arm leaders</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
The Philippine President may have found a kindred soul in Erdogan, a leader known for his charisma, but also for his penchant for strong-arm rule.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
The Turkish President recently won a referendum that keeps him in power until 2029 and curbs powers of Turkey's parliament and judiciary.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-top: 8px;">
Like Duterte, Erdogan started as a local government official. He is a former mayor of Istanbul, Turkey's capital.</div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Sunday test-launched a ballistic missile that flew about 700 kilometers (435 miles), South Korea’s military said, a possible response to the election four days ago of a new South Korean president and as U.S., Japanese and European militaries gather for war games in the Pacific.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"><br /></span>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the early morning launch but had few other details, including what type of ballistic missile was fired. A statement said that the missile was fired from near Kusong City, in North Phyongan province, and that the South Korean and U.S. militaries are analyzing the details.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Outsiders will be especially interested in what kind of projectile was fired. While North Korea regularly tests shorter-range missiles, it is also working to master the technology needed to field nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
North Korea’s past long-range satellite launches have been called clandestine tests of ICBM technology, but it is not believed to have tested a true intercontinental ballistic missile yet. The Trump administration has called North Korean ballistic and nuclear efforts unacceptable and has swung between threats of military action and offers to talk as it formulates a policy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The launch also comes as troops from the U.S., Japan and two European nations gather on remote U.S. islands in the Pacific for drills that are partly a message to North Korea. The USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft supercarrier, is also engaging with South Korean navy ships in waters off the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul’s Defense Ministry.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Last week South Koreans elected a new president, Moon Jae-in, who favors a much softer approach than his conservative predecessor, Park Geun-hye, who is in jail awaiting a corruption trial. North Korea needs tests to perfect its missile program, but it also is thought to stage its launches after the elections of new U.S. and South Korean presidents in an attempt to gauge a new administration’s reaction.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Moon called an emergency national security meeting Sunday, but he didn’t immediately make any statement on the launch.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Moon, the first liberal leader in Seoul in nearly a decade, said as he took his oath of office that he’d be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right. President Donald Trump has also said he’d be “honored” to talk with leader Kim Jong Un under favorable conditions.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
During the South’s so-called “sunshine” era of the late 1990s and early to mid 2000s, liberal South Korean leaders held two summits with Kim Jong Un’s father, the late Kim Jong Il, and shipped huge amounts of aid to the North. Critics say this only helped the elite in Pyongyang build their missile and nuclear programs, while supporters point to the bloodshed, threats of war and nuclear development of the last decade as proof that the conservative approach was no better.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Moon has moved more quickly on domestic economic goals than foreign policy. But analysts say that North Korea’s weapons program is likely too far advanced for him to be able to return to the type of sunshine policies his liberal predecessors favored.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; line-height: 24.8px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
San Francisco/Washington: Hackers exploiting malicious software stolen from the National Security Agency executed damaging cyberattacks Friday that hit dozens of countries worldwide, forcing Britain’s public health system to send patients away, freezing computers at Russia’s Interior Ministry and wreaking havoc on tens of thousands of computers elsewhere.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The attacks amounted to an audacious global blackmail attempt spread by the internet and underscored the vulnerabilities of the digital age.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Transmitted via email, the malicious software locked British hospitals out of their computer systems and demanded ransom before users could be let back in — with a threat that data would be destroyed if the demands were not met.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
By late Friday the attacks had spread to more than 74 countries, according to security firms tracking the spread. Kaspersky Lab, a Russian cybersecurity firm, said Russia was the worst-hit, followed by Ukraine, India and Taiwan. Reports of attacks also came from Latin America and Africa.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The attacks appeared to be the largest ransomware assault on record, but the scope of the damage was hard to measure. It was not clear if victims were paying the ransom, which began at about $300 (Php 14, 916.29) to unlock individual computers, or even if those who did pay would regain access to their data.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Security experts described the attacks as the digital equivalent of a perfect storm. They began with a simple phishing email, similar to the one Russian hackers used in the attacks on the Democratic National Committee and other targets last year.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
They then quickly spread through victims’ systems using a hacking method that the NSA is believed to have developed as part of its arsenal of cyberweapons. And finally they encrypted the computer systems of the victims, locking them out of critical data, including patient records in Britain.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The connection to the NSA was particularly chilling. Starting last summer, a group calling itself the ‘Shadow Brokers’ began to post software tools that came from the United States government’s stockpile of hacking weapons.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The attacks on Friday appeared to be the first time a cyberweapon developed by the NSA, funded by US taxpayers and stolen by an adversary had been unleashed by cybercriminals against patients, hospitals, businesses, governments and ordinary citizens.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
<span style="font-weight: 700;">Targets</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The attacks Friday are likely to raise significant questions about whether the growing number of countries developing and stockpiling cyberweapons can avoid having those same tools purloined and turned against their own citizens.They also showed how easily a cyberweapon can wreak havoc, even without shutting off a country’s power grid or its cell phone network.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
In Britain, hospitals were locked out of their systems, and doctors could not call up patient files. Emergency rooms were forced to divert people seeking urgent care.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
In Russia, the country’s powerful Interior Ministry, after denying reports that its computers had been targeted, confirmed in a statement that “around 1,000 computers were infected,” which it described as less than 1 per cent of its total. The ministry, which oversees Russia’s police forces, said technicians had contained the attack.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Some intelligence officials were dubious about that announcement because they suspect Russian involvement in the theft of the NSA tools.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
But James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said he suspected that criminals operating from Eastern Europe acting on their own were responsible. “This doesn’t look like state activity, given the targets that were hit,” he said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Those targets included corporate computer systems in many other countries — including FedEx in the United States, one of the world’s leading international shippers, as well as Spain’s Telefonica and Russia’s MegaFon telecom giant.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
It could take months to find who was behind the attacks — a mystery that may go unsolved. But they alarmed cybersecurity experts everywhere, reflecting the enormous vulnerabilities to internet invasions faced by disjointed networks of computer systems.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
There is no automatic way to “patch” their weaknesses around the world.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
“When people ask what keeps you up at night, it’s this,” said Chris Camacho, the chief strategy officer at Flashpoint, a New York security firm tracking the attacks. Camacho said he was particularly disturbed at how the attacks spread like wildfire through corporate, hospital and government networks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Another security expert, Rohyt Belani, the chief executive of PhishMe, an email security company, said the wormlike capability of the malware was a significant shift from previous ransom attacks. “This is almost like the atom bomb of ransomware,” Belani said, warning that the attack “may be a sign of things to come.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">

<span style="font-weight: 700;">Weapon of choice</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The hackers’ weapon of choice Friday was Wanna Decryptor, a new variant of the WannaCry ransomware, which encrypts victims’ data, locks them out of their systems and demands ransoms.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Hours after the Shadow Brokers released the tool last month, Microsoft assured users that it had already included a patch for the underlying vulnerability in a software update in March.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
But Microsoft, which regularly credits researchers who discover holes in its products, curiously would not say who had tipped the company off to the issue. Many suspected that the US government itself had told Microsoft, after the NSA realised that its hacking method exploiting the vulnerability had been stolen.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Privacy activists said if that were the case, the government would be to blame for the fact that so many companies were left vulnerable to Friday’s attacks. It takes time for companies to roll out systemwide patches, and by notifying Microsoft of the hole only after the NSA’s hacking tool was stolen, activists say the government would have left many hospitals, businesses and governments susceptible.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
“It would be deeply troubling if the NSA knew about this vulnerability but failed to disclose it to Microsoft until after it was stolen,” Patrick Toomey, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union, said Friday. “These attacks underscore the fact that vulnerabilities will be exploited not just by our security agencies, but by hackers and criminals around the world.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
On Friday, hackers took advantage of the fact that vulnerable targets — particularly hospitals — had yet to patch their systems, either because they had ignored advisories from Microsoft or because they were using outdated software that Microsoft no longer supports or updates.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
The malware was circulated by email. Targets were sent an encrypted, compressed file that, once loaded, allowed the ransomware to infiltrate its targets. The fact that the files were encrypted ensured that the ransomware would not be detected by security systems until employees opened them, inadvertently allowing the ransomware to replicate across their employers’ networks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Employees at Britain’s National Health Service had been warned about the ransomware threat earlier Friday. But it was too late. As the disruptions rippled through at least 36 hospitals, doctors’ offices and ambulance companies across Britain, the health service declared the attack a “major incident,” warning that local health services could be overwhelmed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
Britain’s health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, was briefed by cybersecurity experts, while Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said on television that “we’re not aware of any evidence that patient data has been compromised.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">
As the day wore on, dozens of companies across Europe, Asia and the United States discovered that they had been hit with the ransomware when they saw criminals’ messages on their computer screens demanding $300 to unlock their data. But the criminals designed their ransomware to increase the ransom amount on a set schedule and threatened to erase the hostage data after a predetermined cut-off time, raising the urgency of the attack and increasing the likelihood that victims would pay.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 30px;">

A Hindu nationalist organisation is promising to help Indian couples conceive "superior" babies with high IQs and<br />
fairer skin than their parents, sparking media criticism.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Karishma Mohandas Narwani, head of the Garbh Vigyan Sanskar project, said it advised prospective parents on<br />
how to undergo a "purification" process to ensure their babies were born free of all vices.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
"We have to ensure the seed is good, which means the quality of the sperm and the ovum has to be top-class,"<br />
 Narwani, a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine, said on Tuesday.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
"If that is taken care of, then the baby will have the desired mental, physical and spiritual quality."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
She said couples could produce "superior offspring" by following the organisation's advice on every-thing from<br />
diet to thinking good thoughts.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
"Actually our aim is to produce superior offspring, full of values and culture. The secrets are all there in our<br />
ancient Hindu texts," said Narwani.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
The project, whose name translates as 'scientific purification of the womb', is based in Gujarat, the west-ern<br />
home state of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is treating around 400 couples.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Narwani denied newspaper re-ports that it was linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), an influential<br />
 right-wing Hindu organisation seen as the ideological fountainhead of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
But she said she was working with the help of Arogya Bharti, a group often described as the health wing of the<br />
 RSS.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Ashok Kumar Varshney, an RSS campaigner and secretary of Arogya Bharti, said the group's methods made it<br />
possible for 'parents with low IQ to have offspring with high IQ'. "It is also possible for a dark-skinned couple to<br />
 have fair babies," he added.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
The scheme was criticised in the Indian media, with one report saying it was "straight out of the Nazi playbook".</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
 Eugenics - the controversial belief that one could improve the human race by selective breeding - was a<br />
popular idea in the first half of the 20th century and was notably used by the Nazis.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
But Varshney said the organisation was merely engaged in "motivational activity". </div>

"A farmer will have a good yield only when he prepares the soil properly. Similarly, the purification of the<br />
sperm and egg is very important," he said by phone. "The purification can be done through the right diet,<br />
massage and detox methods."</div>
